House Republicans are searhing for a way to avoid a government shutdown hours before the late Friday deadline, after their second funding proposal was defeated Thursday night.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) Friday afternoon that the House would vote on a modified version of the bill that was defeated on Thursday — minus the debt ceiling provision pushed by President-elect Trump.
Democrats and a few dozen Republicans on Thursday rejected the bill that paired a three-month government funding extension, $110 billion in disaster and farm aid and other measures with a two-year extension of the debt limit.
Senate Republicans were left fuming over what they called the dysfunctional “s‑‑‑ show” and “fiasco” they witnessed in the House, as two proposals to fund the government through Christmas failed this week.
“I guess it’s back to the drawing board,” incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told The Hill as he exited the Capitol.
