New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez under federal investigation again

A federal investigation is now underway against Sen. Bob Menendez, following a failure of a jury to deliver a verdict in his 2017 corruption trial. This was disclosed Wednesday by an adviser to the New Jersey Democrat.

According to Michael Soliman (an adviser to Menendez), “Senator Menendez knows of an investigation that was covered today. However, he doesn’t know the scope of it.” “As always, Senator Menendez is available to assist with any official inquiries that are made,” Soliman, a Menendez adviser, said.

According to a source, the investigation is being conducted by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. It is not clear what the scope of the investigation will be.

Semafor, a digital news agency, was the first to report on the investigation. It described the case as being broadly similar to 2017, but with a different set, citing two people who were familiar with the investigation.

Menendez’s federal corruption trial was thrown out in November 2017, after the jury reported that it was deadlocked.

Menendez was charged with conspiracy, bribery, and honest services fraud for allegedly using the power of his office. These charges could land Menendez decades in prison. Prosecutors claimed that Menendez accepted over $600,000. in political contributions and a luxury hotel suite at Paris’ Park Hyatt. In exchange for political favors, Dr. Salomon MELGEN, a wealthy ophthalmologist gave him free flights on his private jet.

They denied all charges. A federal judge released them from several charges after the mistrial.

Melgen was convicted of dozens of charges of healthcare fraud. He was sentenced to 117 years imprisonment in another case. However, the sentence was commuted in 2021 by Donald Trump.
